We had a busy weekend. Saturday morning I took Amai to a kids’ cooking class where she got to make her own pizza from scratch. That was fun- she really liked it and did really well following instructions and answering questions that the instructors asked. It was through a school called “Young Chef’s Academy” offered through our city rec center programs (you know how much I love that!)
That afternoon, Amai and I went to a princess party for a little friend of hers. It was fun, but she was getting tired and it was a little harder to get her to leave from this event. Plus, what’s the motivation to get into a hot car and leave when you are a social butterfly and are dressed up like a princess with all your friends? We did make it home, but not without tears.
That night I got to cut 11 inches off a friend’s hair in order for her to donate it to Locks of Love- and then I got to cut a fresh hairstyle for her. That was fun- it’s not often that you get to cut a completely new do for someone.
We spent Father’s Day at church in the morning, resting during Ashe’s naptime, and traveling to Arlington to spend some time and eat dinner with Chris’s parents. It was a good day, although I wish we could have celebrated Chris a little bit bigger this year. He’s such an awesome dad- I am so incredibly thankful for what an amazing dad he is to our kids. They (and I) adore him.
Today, while Amai was having her rest time in her room, she taught herself how to tie her shoes! I’m not kidding. I told her how to do it about 3 or 4 months ago, but have never tried to teach it to her again. She came out and showed me her shoelaces tied in a bow and I didn’t believe her. So I made her do it in front of me and sure enough- she can tie her own shoes! This is so in line with her personality- super independent, super determined to do what she sets her mind to. I think I’ll try to start teaching her to read.

She just finished another picture on my favorite childhood toy- her LiteBrite. She is doing well with it and it is helping to reinforce her letter recognition. I’m so glad LiteBrite is still around.

That’s all for now- Ashe is awake, my break is over!
Today was Amai’s first ice-skating lesson. It was hilarious. She had a ball and only cried once when she really wiped out hard. Of course it may take several weeks to just start moving forward, but it was so funny to watch. At one point they sat the kids on plastic frisbees and pushed them across the ice rink. She laughed that huge belly laugh of hers and it is so cute and funny that all the parents in the stands laughed too. I love it when she laughs…
I have to just say that I am such a huge fan of all the programs that are offered through community rec centers. They’re super cheap, just enough teaching for the age range without being too serious, and there is a wide range of activities to choose from each semester. I love it! The awesome thing is that I can sign her up for different things almost every month or two- so she has the benefit of trying different things and eventually we have the benefit of being able to see where her natural abilities are without spending a fortune.

I took both the kids to the grocery store today and gave them a couple of m&m’s as a reward for doing so well there. Amai ate hers quickly and neatly, as she has always tended to- Ashe ate his slowly and messily, as he has always done!

I bought some reusable grocery bags- they work well and hold so much more than a plastic bag. Plus they aren’t wasteful. I’m not as green as I could be, but we are making more and more efforts to be both organic and green as a family. We make sure and buy milk that is hormone free- meat, veggies, and fruit that are organic (unless we are extremely pinched for money)- and I’ve tried really hard not to waste food at all. The next thing I want to do is to start a compost pile and start growing a few herbs and eventually fruits and veggies in a garden. Not yet though- I need a little more of the house remodeling to get done first.
